How to spot car finance claim scams

The car finance compensation scheme has brought out scammers. Here's how to spot them, and how to check any claims company, including us.

Warning signs

  • Someone calls or texts out of the blue saying you're owed car finance compensation and asks for your bank details. Lenders have warned about these calls.
  • You're asked to pay a fee upfront. Regulated claims companies handling car finance claims take their fee from any compensation, not before.
  • They promise a set amount before they've seen your agreement, or say the money is guaranteed.
  • They pretend to be your lender or the FCA. The FCA doesn't contact people to arrange compensation.
  • They pressure you to act today. There's no deadline this week or this month.
  • They signed you up without asking. Clicking an advert shouldn't sign you up to anything.

How to check a claims company

Every claims management company has to be authorised by the FCA. Before you sign up with anyone:

  • Search for the company on the FCA Register and check its name and website match.
  • Check the FCA Warning List for clones. The FCA has warned about at least one fake firm using the name CarFinanceClaim on a different website.
  • Read the fee before you sign. Fees for financial claims are capped by the FCA.

Checking us

carfinanceclaim.co.uk is a trading style of RFLCS Ltd, FCA reference number 978092. We introduce customers to Consultation Claims Ltd, FCA reference number 836626, who handle the claims. Our only website is carfinanceclaim.co.uk, and we never ask for bank details or an upfront payment.

If you're contacted by anyone claiming to be us from another website, phone number or email, don't give them any details. Email us at info@carfinanceclaim.co.uk instead. More about who we are.

If you think you've been scammed

  • Contact your bank straight away if you've shared bank details or made a payment.
  • Report it to Action Fraud (or Police Scotland if you're in Scotland).
  • Report the firm to the FCA through its scam reporting page.

Questions people ask

Will my lender ask me for bank details?

If you've made a complaint and your lender has offered you compensation, it may ask where to pay it. A cold call asking for your bank details before any of that is a warning sign. Hang up and contact your lender using the details on its own website.

Is carfinanceclaim.co.uk legitimate?

Yes. carfinanceclaim.co.uk is a trading style of RFLCS Ltd, authorised and regulated by the FCA (FRN 978092). You can check us on the FCA Register.

You don't have to use a claims management company. You can complain to your lender, and then to the Financial Ombudsman Service, for free.
